Jersey Junior Pool - Taunton 2004 event |
The CI juniors traveled to Taunton for the annual team event and singles competition. They traveled with 2 teams with the “B” side there for some experience. The “A” team consisted of 3 Guernsey juniors. No1 ranked Jess De la Haye, Tom Le Page and Ashley Perrien, they played alongside Ryan Shaw and Andrew Stentisford from Jersey. They reached the final having beaten along the way their “B” team 21-4 and a fantastic struggle against Bristol to reach the final against their hosts Taunton. The game against Bristol started really badly for the youngsters as they went 8-3 down and where struggling ,but 7 wins on the bounce seen them take the lead for the first time in the match as Le page won two, as did De la Haye with Stentisford, Shaw and Perrien all winning one each. There was no stopping the team after that as they went on to win 15-10. Perrien won 4 out of 5 In the final they faced the host for the tournament, Taunton. Once again the youngsters got off to a bad start as they where very quickly 8-2 down.4 on the bounce seen them bring the deficit down as Le Page, Shaw, Perrien and De la Haye all won. Three wins for Taunton put them 11-6 in the lead in the race to 13. The CI team won the next 4 as Perrien, De la Haye, Stentisford and Le Page all won to trail only by one. Liam Anderson for Taunton beat Perrien and then Shaw beat Matt Aster to bring the score to 12-11 with two too play. De la Haye lost to Jake Andrews so the last game was not played for Taunton to lift the Dickie Watts Memorial trophy for the first time. The CI lads have won it on 2 occasions, but not to be this year. The CI boys figured prominently in the singles event with three of them reaching the semis. Young Ryan Shaw was beaten 4-2 by Taunton Capt Terry Gibbs. This was a very close game which neither player deserved to lose. The other semi was between Andrew Stentisford and Jess De la Haye. This was another very close match with De la Haye edging it 4-3, again neither player deserved to lose and the match was played to a superbly high degree. Both are prolific potters and will feature heavily at the forthcoming World Championships in Blackpool. The final was all De la Haye as he potted his opponent Gibbs off the table. He eventually won 5-2 and will add this trophy to his Guernsey singles win. He is also ranked no1 this year. Said coach Paul Bolton. “This was a learning trip as we blooded 6 new juniors. Had we taken a full strength squad I am in no doubt we would have lifted the team trophy, but this trip was not about winning, it was all about giving young players experience at this level, and we certainly achieved that. They handled themselves magnificently and should be very proud of themselves”. |
