The Jersey Pool Championships held at the Omarroo Hotel on sat and sun has a new champion as young Chris Alexander, fresh from his victory in the C I International in Nov added yet another championship to his CV.
He had a hard path to the final as in the first 2 rounds he faced the old guard in John Beadle and Gerry McDonald, and outputted them both. Next was the Portuguse 9-ball top player Valerio Basillio, and out foxed him with the rules on the way to a 5-1 win. Next was previos champion Chris Melville, and he too was out potted as Alexander won easily 5-2. In the semis he faced the winner of the last two years Aaron Canavan. He had no answer to Alexanders potting ability as he easily dispatched the experienced Canavan 5-1
In the final, he would face the player who has won more titles than the rest of the top players put together over the years, Gary Cook, he had a bye in the first round, then faced Carlos Rodrigues and organiser Paul Bolton in the next two rounds, and out potted them both. Then came the no1 Portuguese player, Rosky, this was a closer affair, and could have gone either way, but Cook eventually won 5-3
In the semis he faced the young Dane Jennings, who had played superbly to reach the semis, but Cook was just too good on the day and won fairly easily 5-1
The final was a race to 6, and after a few frames Cook was 2-0 ahead, but Alexander came back to level at 2-2, the break off shots where not the best, so clearances where few and far between, and it looked to be a 5-5 all over it, and that is exactly how it panned out, the final frame decider was an anti climax as Cook in advertently potted the black early as he potted another ball.
The event was sponsored by Langley Automatics Co Ltd with Alexander picking up £300 for his efforts |
