Channel Island - Upton 2007 |
The 2007 Upton in the Captains Challenge Pool Leagues run jointly by Langley Automatics in Jersey and International Leisure in Guernsey was as always a great occasion. The winners of the premiere league in Jersey 147 Club captained by Chris Alexander did not want to go to Guernsey to play the fixture despite the trip being paid for and an over night stay. Instead Boogie Knights who finished second and captained by C I capt Ady Bougourd did. They invited Clive De Sousa from the 147 who wanted to compete in this prestigious event, more so as the Guernsey presentation evening was taking place on the same evening at the Happy Landings. A special arena had been erected in the Landings to give it a more vibrant atmosphere with two tables surrounded by over 200 pool players picking up there trophies and prize monies. The event was hosted by Adrian Locke of International Leisure and Randalls Brewery where also in attendance. The Mr Bs where the only previous Jersey team to win the event when 3 years ago they beat the Gremlins 13-12. Bougourd was a member of the Mr Bs team to win that night and Paul Bolton the then capt was in the Knights team. Also in the team that night was the veteran of many Jersey vs Guernsey battles Leigh Ruderham along with ex junior Andy Stentiford this was the Jersey team. The Happy Landings where the winners of the Guernsey leagues and where captained by island player Tommy Simon, with Martyn Le page, Glen Le Provest, Andy Eborral and Alan Opie who have all represented Guernsey over the years. The game as always was the best of 25 and as always the score fluctuated back and forward. It was the host team who got off to a flier as they raced through the first session 4-1 as Le Page out potted Ady Bougourd, Simon with a great finish against Stentiford, Le Provest doing likewise to De Sousa, Opie with a 5 ball clearance against Ruderham. Paul Bolton stopped the rot as he had a clearance against Eborral for the Landings to lead 4-1. Session two saw the Knights come alive as they drew level as they won the session 4-1 as Bougourd, Stentiford, De Sousa and Ruderham all got off the mark, Opie won vs Bolton and tha game was 5-5 with all to play for. Session 3 saw the visitors take a one frame lead in the match as Bougourd, De Sousa and Ruderham all won, with Simon and Opie for the landings winning. Session 4 was the defining factor in the match as the visitors won it 4-1 as Bougourd beat Le Provest, Stentiford did likewise to Eborral, De Sousa playing great pool and pretty fearless out potted Opie, who had been the Landings top player and then Bolton potted a long black against Le Page.Simon stopped the rot as he beat Ruderham. The score now stood at 12-8 to the Knights. Opie again playing great pool beat Bougourd to give hope to the Landings, but it was fitting in the next frame that Clive De Sousa won the match for the Knights as he beat Simon. De Sousa was given the man of the match award as he not only played great but was the only player from the 147 Club who wanted to compete |
