The Upton Cup for pool will remain in Guernsey for another year as the Mafia beat Hot Cookies 13-11 in the best of 25 match, and what a match it was with both teams throwing away leads throughout. Hot Cookies got off to a flier as they on the first 2 frames as Chris Melville beat Ady Holly and Clive De Sousa did likewise to Paul Duncombe. The Mafia struck back as John Skillett beat Gary Cook. Rick De Garis beat Andy Stentiford to level at 2-2. Although Carl Dix beat Martin Desperques for Cookies to lead again, this was to be the only the p enultimate time in the match that they would lead again as the mafia went 2 ahead as Duncombe and Skillett won again to lead 4-3.
The next 6 frames where shared as Cook, Dix and DE Sousa all won for Cookies and Desperques, (2) and Duncombe all won for the Mafia to lead 7-6.Stentiford beat Skillett to level and they took the lead or the last time as Dix beat De Garis for Hot Cookies to lead 8-7.
This is when the Mafia took control of the game as they won the next four games, Skillettt beat Melville, De Garis with a great clearance against De Sousa, Desperques was let off the hook by Cook and Holly left with a simple black as Stentiford missed an open yellow to lead 11-8. Dix who was the man of the match for Cookies won his fourth game as he outputted Duncombe, but again The Mafia won the next as De Garis again with a great finish beat Melville to put them 1 away from victory with 3 games to play. De Sousa gave Cookies hope s he despatched Desperques, but with both the last 2 players , Skillett and Duncombe both winning, it was a second defeat on the trot for Cookies, although it must be said, that in comparison to last years result, it was a whole lot better. Guernsey at this moment in time are the stronger island as has been proved with a clean sweep so far this season. They have the Ladies and Junior insular trophies. The men’s one will be sometime in September, so all still to play for as far as Jersey is concerned
